U.S. Threatens 100% Tariffs on Russia as Trump Pushes for Ceasefire
Trump sets 50-day ceasefire deadline, ties new tariffs and NATO arms to Ukraine conflict.
President Trump warned Monday that the U.S. will impose 100% secondary tariffs on nations doing business with Russia if a ceasefire in Ukraine isn’t reached within 50 days.
Standing alongside NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Trump said he’s “very unhappy” with Putin and added, “I thought we would have had a deal two months ago… If we don't have a deal in 50 days, it’s very simple.” (The Independent)
Doubling Down on Economic Pressure
The penalties would effectively double the cost of imports from countries that continue purchasing Russian oil and other key exports, a move designed to isolate Russia economically without relying on direct military escalation.
Trump called the missile strikes on Kyiv “horrific,” saying, “I hope we don’t get to the point where we do [tariffs]… but it’s all talk, and then missiles go into Kyiv and kill 60 people.” (The Independent)
Weapons Flow Through NATO
Trump also announced a new tranche of American-made weapons would be delivered to Ukraine through NATO allies, who will finance the purchases.
“We’re going to make top-of-the-line weapons,” Trump said, while praising Ukrainian soldiers for their “tremendous courage” and calling Russia’s recent attacks on civilians “really terrible.” (The Independent)
