Trump Secures Ceasefire in Iran-Israel Clash, but Will it Hold?
President Trump announces truce between Iran and Israel after 12 days of firepower, but accusations of violations continue to fly.
After nearly two weeks of escalating missile exchanges and nuclear facility strikes, President Trump announced late Monday that a ceasefire between Israel and Iran had taken effect.
Truce Comes After Days of Escalation
Brokered by the U.S. and Qatar, the deal was meant to halt a spiraling conflict that had already killed hundreds and pushed the Middle East to the brink. Iran said it would stop attacks if Israel did the same. Israel formally accepted the proposal just after 06:00 GMT. (BBC)
Missile Fire Raises Doubts
But hours later, Israel accused Iran of violating the deal and resumed airstrikes in retaliation. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard claimed its final missile barrage had been launched “in the final moments before the ceasefire.” (BBC)
Speaking on Truth Social, Trump urged both nations to hold the line: “Please do not violate [the ceasefire]!” He later told reporters that he had instructed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to “turn planes around” and added, “These guys [have] got to calm down.” (WSJ, AP)
Trump Says Intervention Averted Bloodshed
Trump later told reporters aboard Air Force One that Israeli planes did turn back at his request, which he said helped prevent further bloodshed. “Nobody was killed,” he said, adding that there would be no consequences for the ceasefire violation since the strike was ultimately averted.
Trump also insisted the pressure campaign was working: “Iran’s not going to have a nuclear weapon… it’s the last thing on their mind right now.” (WSJ)
The coming days will test whether the ceasefire is real - or already unraveling.
